Dr. Emery answers FAQs about Voluma
Q. Is Voluma right for me?
A. If you have sagging skin or loss of volume in your cheeks, you may be a great candidate for Voluma. As one of the first physicians trained to use Voluma, I’ve seen outstanding results first-hand on patients with varying degrees of volume loss in the cheeks.
Q. What is Voluma and how does it work?
A. Voluma is a Hyaluronic Acid (HA) gel that’s injected into the skin to instantly restore lost volume to the cheeks. HA is a sugar that occurs naturally in the skin and gives it a plump appearance, but as you age you start to lose HA, which causes the skin to lose structure and volume. Loss of volume in the cheeks leads to sagging skin and an aged, hollow appearance. By restoring lost volume, Voluma instantly creates a more youthful appearance.
Q. How does Voluma differ from other fillers?
A. Voluma is formulated using VYCROSS™ technology, which provides more lift and a longer duration than other fillers on the market. Voluma was designed to restore facial volume as opposed to just filling wrinkles, and is the first and only HA gel filler FDA-approved for the cheeks.
Q. How soon will I see results?
A. You see results instantly with Voluma.
Q. How long do results last?
A. Clinical studies show that Voluma lasts up to 2 years.
Q. Is Voluma safe?
A. Voluma is an HA gel, and HA is naturally occurring in the skin. Clinical studies on Voluma showed that it has an excellent safety profile. In fact, while Voluma is newer to the U.S. market, it has already been used in 72 countries around the world. But if you have a history of allergies, let us know, and we can determine if Voluma is right for you.
Q. Are there needles or incisions? Does it hurt?
A. Like Botox® Cosmetic and Juvéderm®, Voluma is injected into the skin using a fine needle. To help minimize injection discomfort, Voluma contains a small amount of Lydocaine, a common and highly effective local anesthetic. Because comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, we can discuss additional numbing options for making the experience as pleasant as possible.
Q. How long does it take? Is there downtime?
A. Appointments typically last 15-30 minutes. You may experience some tenderness and redness, and applying ice to the area after treatment may be recommended to help minimize swelling. Bruising is also a potential side effect, but this can be minimized by avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen, omega-3s, salmon and red wine prior to your appointment. While exercise or heavy lifting is not recommended, you can resume most other normal activities right away.
